Kauai Recap: Activities, Outfits, and More

kauai waterfall

My recent trip to Kauai felt more like a dream than reality. It was filled with magical places and moments. I’m really grateful for the things I experienced while visiting: waterfall hiking, swimming in the warm turquoise waters, and even feeding a friendly horse. Kauai is known as the “Garden Island” and for good reason. It’s luscious terrain and pristine beaches make it a truly perfect tropical getaway. As someone who’s travelled to multiple tropical getaway destinations, Kauai has become my new favorite. We went to visit friends that live on the island, so we got a few inside tips on places to check out.

Day 1

Arriving at our VRBO: we left Portland in the morning and our flight super easy. We arrived at our VRBO in the afternoon, happy to see how nice it was. The property is right outside of Kapaa, and it’s both private and quiet. It’s a yurt-style home, surrounded by luscious gardens. It was so easy to unwind here!

Day 2

Hitting the beach: one of my all-time favorite activities is swimming in the ocean (warm waters that is). I just love the feeling of swimming in a dynamic body of water. Many of the beaches in Kauai are perfect for swimming. The turquoise waters are warm and clear. The beaches where we swam were fairly mellow, however, there are definitely dangerous areas so pay attention to the signs that are on the beach.  Our favorite beach to swim at was near Kapaa where were staying called Kealia Beach.

Day 3

Exploring Waimea Canyon State Park: we drove to the other side of the island and headed into Waimea Canyon. There are a couple of beautiful lookout points off this drive. From what our friends said, rain clouds will often block the views in the park, but we got lucky with a clear morning.

Day 4

Another day at the beach: more beach time! It was a beautiful day, and I’m not gonna lie… I got a little too much sun that day.

Exploring Kapaa: after the beach, we walked around the main area in Kapaa where there are lots of cute little bars and cafes. I found the perfect spot for my outfit.

Dinner at our friend’s: we had dinner at our friend’s house that evening. They live off a gorgeous somewhat rural road. When we went for a walk, we fed their neighbor’s sweet horse some ripe lychee we pulled right off a tree along the way. This was one of my favorite moments of the trip.

Day 5

ATV cruise on Jurassic Kahili Ranch: our last day was pretty jam packed. We headed up to the North Shore and took a drive on an ATV through the Jurassic Kahili Ranch. It’s a 2800 acre ranch that where much of the filming for the Jurassic Park series was done. The property is pristine and extremely well kept. Absolutely stunning!

Waterfall hike: next we did a waterfall hike. This was actually a fairly short and easy little hike. But our destination was nothing short of stunning. This was my other favorite experience on the trip. I didn’t realize we’d be swimming, so I didn’t have a suit, but the water was too gorgeous to resist.

Exploring Hanalei Bay: after the hike we headed up to a beautiful area called Hanalei Bay for some shaved ice. There are lots of cute little shops and restaurants in this area. Great for an afternoon hangout.

After grabbing some pics of the bay, we hit Wishing Well Shaved Ice which is supposed to be best on the island. I highly recommend this place! They have a super creative/impressive menu offering acai bowls in addition to shaved ice. I ordered the rainbow shaved ice which was topped with a coconut cream and actually had macadamia nut ice cream on the bottom. Mmmm! I would go back to Kauai just to have that again!

Dinner out in Kapaa- OOTN: for our last night we walked around Kapaa a bit before heading to a nice dinner with our friends. There’s an amazing little fruit stand in downtown Kapaa that serves ice cold coconut. A must try!

This vacation was truly an amazing experience! One of the things I loved most about traveling to Kauai was how easy everything was. The plane ride was short and sweet, and I loved being able to use my phone non-stop without hassles.
